NRI community collects $21,000 US for Dr. Sekhon's election campaign

On Sunday September 24, 2006, the Sikh community of Los Angeles
organized a dinner at the Diamond Palace Restaurant to promote Dr.
Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon’s run for US Congress.
Mr. Hanwant Bir Singh Sawhney, Vice-President of Shri Guru Singh
Sabha Gurdwara of Walnut conducted the meeting and introduced Dr.
Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon to the public. Mr. Sawhney seeked the maximum
financial and moral support for Dr. Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon. Mr.
Sawhney said that Dr. Sekhon is a firm believer in Sikhism and he
is the perfect candidate to represent Sikhs and Punjabi’s
in the US Congress. Mr. Sawhney further concluded that helping Dr.
Sekhon is like helping our community and if Dr. Sekhon is elected
then he will be first person of Indian origin who wears a turban
to represent the Indian Community and clear the misconceptions that
the American people have about the Sikhs and India.
“There are a few people that you meet in
your lifetime who’s biography you get to know or read - and
it instantly makes you think “Wow!” That was my first
impression when I heard about Dr Arjinderpal Sekhon! Most of you
are here because you believe that Dr Sekhon can bring about a positive
change for the United State of America. You believe in his ideas,
his dreams and his stand on the topics that affect us all living
here in America. He is highly educated(having obtained a medical
and law degree ), as well as being highly decorated in the US Army.
With that impressive background, I believe that by electing Dr Sekhon
for US Congress, we will be able to get across to the American public
about what a SIKH AMERICAN is all about.
I have never experienced racism firsthand until the weeks following
9/11. I was actually there at the World Trade center that day and
was overwhelmed with sadness and anger that all of America felt
towards those who were behind this deadly terrorist act. But unfortunately
I began to notice how average Americans started to treat Sikhs in
the US who wore a turban. They were being mistaken for being Muslim
terrorists and were responsible for the atrocities of 9/11. Consequently,
I wished we could educate those Americans who are ignorant to other
people’s customs or beliefs and show them that just because
someone is wearing a turban, or looking Middle Eastern, doesn’t
mean they are terrorists. I believe we have found a way to let people
see what a Sikh American looks like! We have to get our Sikh community
involved in the politics of this great nation so we can show them
that we are proud of our beliefs and proud to be American. We are
already known for being highly educated people, but now we need
to be known as being aggressive in wanting to better our country.
We need to support each other.
On a personal note, I would like to Thank Dr. Sekhon for standing
up for this election. I hope we can help you win this election so
your visibility will help future generations of Sikh Americans.
