Tech Leaders from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI are set to host a fundraiser for Kamala Harris, aiming to balance the tech industry's recent shift toward supporting Donald Trump.
What's Happening: The tech sector has recently shown increasing support for Trump, with notable Silicon Valley investors backing the former president. However, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris still maintains significant backing within the tech community, according to Business Insider.
The fundraiser, organized by top executives from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI, will take place in Washington, DC, on August 27. The event will feature notable figures such as Josh Hsu, Harris’s former chief legal adviser, and Rohini Kosoglu, a former domestic policy advisor to the vice president.
The hosting committee includes policy experts from Google, Netflix, and OpenAI, along with senior staff from JPMorgan, McKinsey & Company, and Omidyar Network. Tickets range from $500 to $6,600.
Why It Matters: This fundraiser is pivotal for Harris, who recently clinched the Democratic nomination following Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race. With the election just months away, Harris and Trump are set to face off in November.
Support for Harris continues to grow, with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings publicly endorsing her. Hastings has donated $7 million to her campaign. Additionally, the “VCs for Kamala” website, launched on Wednesday, showcases over a hundred venture capitalists pledging their support and fundraising efforts for Harris.
In contrast, Trump’s media ventures have faced setbacks, with shares of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. dropping by 22.26% since Harris’s nomination.
