Dr Ashok Kumar elected British Parliament 2005. He built on a very high local profile as a councillor and is arguably one of the most regionally-focused MPs in the Commons.

Dr Ashok Kumar was also elected to the Commons in 1997 but had previously briefly sat for the same seat (then named Langbaurgh) after a 1991 by-election, before losing it in 1992.

Many of his interventions in the Commons are based around local issues, such as the policing controversies which have rocked Cleveland and the strength of the regional economy.

He is a largely loyal to the leadership and is on the Fabian modernising of the party, although he has made some gentle criticisms of the government's record on delivery.

A highly qualified research scientist with British Steel before his election, he is a member of the Commons science and technology committee.

Mr Kumar is a fierce critic of the management of British Steel's successor company, Corus, and called for its chief executive to be stripped of his knighthood after the company announced widespread redundancies.
