On Sept 13, 2024  Protests have continued in West Bengal over the rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered her resignation, stating it was "for the sake of the people."

At a press conference, Banerjee expressed her apology to Bengal residents who hoped for a resolution: "I apologize to the people of Bengal who expected an end to the RG Kar impasse today. The junior doctors came to Nabanna but did not attend the meeting. I request them to return to work." She reiterated that despite her efforts over the past three days, the doctors refused to engage in discussions.

However, the protesting junior doctors insisted they never asked for Banerjee's resignation. They criticized the state government’s refusal to allow live streaming of the meeting and affirmed that their main goal is justice for the murdered doctor.
"The chief minister's remarks are unfortunate. We were prepared for talks, but the state was adamant against live streaming. Our demands are justified, and we wanted transparency," one of the protesting doctors stated. The doctors remain firm in their decision to continue protests until their demands are met.

Protests, led by junior doctors, have gripped Kolkata, with Banerjee waiting more than two hours for a scheduled meeting that did not take place. The protesters clarified, "We never asked for her resignation. Our goal is justice for the RG Kar Hospital doctor. We wanted a resolution and are disappointed the talks didn’t happen, but we are still waiting for a response from the administration."

Another medic emphasized that their demands are solely focused on seeking justice, not on the resignation of the Chief Minister. "Our aim is justice for the murdered doctor. Nowhere in our five demands have we sought her resignation, and even the victim’s parents haven’t requested it."
