Brampton- Dr. Ruby Dhalla, Member of Parliament for Brampton Springdale had the honor of joining renowned Indian pediatrician, author and activist, Dr. Harshinder Kaur in the global fight against female feticide in New York this past weekend.

As a recipient of the United Nations Laadli Media Award in recognition of her work to prevent female feticide, Dr. Kaur is a world renowned advocate for India’s Save The Girl Child campaign. Dr. Dhalla was invited to join both Dr. Kaur, and Indian artist, Satinder Satti and JUS Punjabi Broadcasting Corporation in New York City to raise awareness for
the campaign to stop female feticide.

With over 50 million deaths over the past 50 years of female fetuses in India and China, the statistics of female feticide are alarming. The Save the Girl Child Campaign is vital to stopping this growing gender imbalance and skewed sex ratio in India of girls to boys. We must work together to promote equality, education and opportunity for young girls and women to ensure we put an end to female feticide,” said Dhalla.

In addition Dr. Dhalla also spoke about her initiative of having a state holiday declared in India for the celebration and recognition of the achievements of women. Celebrating mothers, daughters and sisters with a state holiday will help to create a focal point to raise awareness of the struggles and sacrifices made in the women’s movement worldwide and will help to identify issues and challenges faced by girls and women such as female feticide, education of young girls and the involvement of women in the political arena.

In 2004, Dr. Dhalla made history as one of the first Sikh women to be elected to Canadian Parliament and is also one of the first women of Indian origin to be elected to a federal parliament in the western world. As one of the youngest women currently in Canadian Parliament, Dr. Dhalla has been a strong advocate for issues impacting women, and youth and most recently hosted the launch of the Loomba Foundation in Canada with former First Lady of Britain, Cherie Blair to help empower widows and their children in developing countries.

“Community leaders, families, educational institutions, non-government organizations, religious leaders and families must work together to stop this inhuman and regressive practice of female feticide. We must work together to ensure the cultural practice of issuing a dowry is abolished and support the creation of legislation that values women and provides girls with the opportunity to succeed” said Dhalla
