U.S. Military Deports Migrants to India in Longest-Distance Flight Yet

U.S. military aircraft has been deployed to deport migrants to India, marking the farthest destination for a deportation flight under the Trump administration's immigration policies, according to a U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity.

The C-17 military transport plane, which departed on Monday, is expected to arrive in India within 24 hours. This flight is part of President Donald Trump’s broader strategy to utilize military resources in enforcing his stringent immigration agenda. The administration has increasingly relied on the military to support immigration enforcement, including sending additional troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, using military aircraft for deportation flights, and converting military bases into temporary housing for detained migrants.

The Pentagon has also ramped up deportation operations domestically, providing flights to remove more than 5,000 migrants detained in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California. Military aircraft have previously transported migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras, but the recent flight to India represents the longest such journey to date.

These military deportation flights come with significant costs. A recent report by Reuters indicated that a deportation flight to Guatemala last week likely cost at least $4,675 per migrant, raising concerns about the financial efficiency of using military resources for such operations.

As the Trump administration continues to prioritize aggressive immigration enforcement measures, the use of military assets for deportations is expected to expand, prompting further scrutiny from lawmakers and human rights organizations.
