The resignation by a senior IAS Officer Sh. Jasbir Singh Bir protesting political high handedness has only confirmed, reinforced and vindicated the allegations of the congress party of a politicized administrative set up in Punjab.  An officer of Commissioner level was disgracefully shunted out of office for having the courage to get buses belonging to Chief Minister’s family dislodged for being illegally parked and operated from a Mohali shop-cum-office complex.

The present SAD-BJP Govt. has broken the chain of command in the disciplined civil services of the state.  The Akali’s are only looking for pliable officers who will carry out their illegal and unconstitutional orders, being honest and upright is no more a criteria in Punjab.  Only the other day DC Kapurthala asked the police to uproot and destroy a foundation stone of an elected representative causing serious breach of privilege.

It is saddening to note that officers are willing to become handy tools to the whims and fancies of such and arrogant and hot headed politicians.  Before offering important field and plum postings to officers their political masters confirm whether they would terrorize, victimize and intimidate the political opponents of the Akali’s, only then such corrupt inefficient and pliable officers are given important postings.  Senior bureaucrats and police officers prostrate and accept all such illegitimate orders only to make money out of these postings.

Sh. Jasbir Singh Bir’s resignation has also confirmed the breakdown of administrative machinery in the state, the Badal’s are using this machinery as a private army to browbeat its opponents besides getting undue favours. It is also saddening to note the helplessness of the Chief Secretary in protecting the rights and self respect of an upright and honest officer like Sh. Jasbir Singh Bir.

The resignation episode of the senior IAS officers calls for a serious introspection of the breakdown of constitutional machinery in the state. The congress calls for a thorough probe into the humiliation of the said officer to find out who is responsible for not carrying out his official orders presumably under political patronage of none less than the Chief Minister’s family.  Congress party also calls for time bound inquiry to fix responsibility on erring junior officer and also demands that the buses of orbit company belonging to the CM’s family be immediately removed from the said commercial complex in Mohali.
