Some people say lucky numbers and others say VIP number plate.
NRI from UK, Santokh Singh bid Rs 4.8 lakh for registration number,
CH 04 0001 and now belongs to his C-Class Mercedes Benz. The reserve
price for the number was Rs.25,000. The highest bid made for any
number was Rs.505,000 two years ago for the CH 03-U-0001 series.
Santokh Singh belongs to Hoshiarpur district, is in transport business
and deals in luxury cars and trucks
For the past 5-6 years, people are crazy about VIP numbers when
open auctioning of these registration numbers.
The auction money is among the highest at the RLA for any number,
say officials. The CH 03 U-series had seen the highest bid of over
Rs 5 lakh. Few example of bidding are:
- CH 04 0006 for Rs 1.2 lakh
- CH 04 0007 for Rs 1.75 lakh.
- CH 04 0005 was auctioned for Rs 91,000
- 0004 for Rs 95,000
- 0009 for Rs 78,000
- CH 04 0786, had a reserve price of just Rs 5,000, was finally
bought for Rs 50,000.
- For all single digit numbers- bidding began with the reserve
price of Rs 15,000.
- For double digits, the reserve price was Rs 10,000
- for three digits the bidding began with Rs 5,000
The Chinese obsession of lucky numbers has helped fuel development
in some cities as people cash in on items like custom license plates.
Hong Kong has been holding special auctions on license plate numbers
since 1973, where people with big money to spend vie for plates
with lucky numbers like eights and nines.
