On Aug 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the national flag from the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive Independence Day, expressing confidence that India’s 1.4 billion citizens can achieve the nation’s goal of becoming prosperous and developed by working together with a united resolve.

Modi highlighted his government's efforts to break away from the status quo mindset by implementing significant reforms aimed at improving the lives of the middle class and the poor. He emphasized that the commitment to reforms is driven by a dedication to putting the nation first, rather than political motives. Modi pointed out the growth in the banking sector as a key factor powering progress across various sectors.

During his speech on the country’s 78th Independence Day, Modi paid tribute to those who sacrificed and struggled for India’s freedom, stating, "The country is indebted to them." He also expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in recent natural disasters, noting the increasing frequency of such events as a concern.

This address marked Modi's first Independence Day speech of his third term, surpassing Manmohan Singh, who raised the flag 10 times during his tenure from 2004 to 2014. Modi now trails only Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who unfurled the flag 17 and 16 times, respectively. Before arriving at the Red Fort, Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial.

Modi reiterated that India's citizens can overcome challenges and resource shortages through unity to achieve the goal of a developed nation. He cited the government's success in electrifying remote areas, providing piped water to millions of homes, promoting the "vocal for local" initiative, and advancing renewable energy to boost national confidence.

The world’s interest in learning from India’s achievements, especially in the fintech sector, is a source of national pride, Modi noted.

He also mentioned that citizens have contributed suggestions to help India become a developed nation by 2047, including ideas for making India the global "skill capital" and a manufacturing hub. “The words ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ reflect the resolve and dreams of 1.4 billion people,” Modi said during his address.
