The Canadian division of India's largest bank has pledged its
support for Canadian athletes competing in the October 2010 Delhi
Commonwealth Games.
The State Bank of India (SBIC) is the first member of the Indo-Canadian
community to join Commonwealth Games Canada's (CGC) national “Dream
it in Delhi” fundraising campaign. The campaign will help
send approximately 250 Canadian athletes to compete against more
than 70 other nations and territories at the XIX Commonwealth Games
in Delhi, India, Oct. 3 to 14, 2010.
“The 2010 Commonwealth Games are sure to be a source of pride
for all Indians,” said Arun Nagarajan, President and CEO of
SBIC. “Not only is this an opportunity to open doors for Canadian
athletes, it is a way to strengthen the connection between Canada
and India, as well as build relationships with other Commonwealth
nations throughout the world. State Bank of India (Canada) is very
proud to be a partner in helping to prepare Canada's athletes to
excel at the Games. We view this contribution as a way to share
in Canada’s success at the Games."
SBIC's donation will contribute to the CGC's Adopt-an-Athlete program,
which covers expenses related to travel and accommodation, medical
services, team uniform, and media operations, among other costs.
SBIC joins several companies and organizations that have already
made a donation to the program.
“We are so pleased SBIC has extended their support for Canadian
athletes,” said George Heller, President of the Commonwealth
Games Foundation of Canada. “They have led by example, and
we are confident they will be one of many members of the Indo-Canadian
community to partner with CGC in the lead-up to the Games in 2010.”
Members of the public are invited to contact CGC or visit www.commonwealthgames.ca
for details on how to contribute to the “Dream it in Delhi”
fundraising campaign.
