House of Lords Appointments Commission appointed Khalid Hameed, 65, High Sheriff of Greater London, as one of the six new non-party political peers at Britain's Upper House

Khalid is a hospital management exper, leader in the promotion of international understanding and the development of young peopl. He was born in Lucknow and educated at Lucknow University. He arrived in Britain in 1968 and worked for three London teaching hospitals. Expressing great ecstasy on his appointment to the House of Lords, the 65 year old Hameed wishes to play a pivotal role in the parliamentary affairs of the country

Dr Khalid Hameed has been Chairman of the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council since 1997. He is also the High Sheriff of Greater London and Chairman of Alpha Hospitals. Formerly, he was Executive Director and Chief Executive of the Cromwell Hospital. He is involved in a number of organisations and charities which help develop harmony between diverse faiths and cultures in the UK.

Hameed, who was made a commander of the Excellent Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 2003, won the Sternberg Interfaith Award in 2005 in recognition of his contribution to furthering Christian-Muslim-Jewish relations in the UK.

In May 2000 a historic change was made to the way in which non–party–political members of the House of Lords are appointed. The Appointments Commission was given the key role of recommending to Her Majesty The Queen the names of individuals we think should be appointed on merit.

Others five new House of Lords are:

  • Paul Bew, an academic and leading commentator on Northern Irish politics
  • Jane Campbell, campaigner for disability rights and social care
  • Jean Coussins, an adviser on corporate responsibility and self-regulation
  • John Krebs, an international expert in behavioural ecology
  • Andrew Mawson, a "social entrepreneur" who has played a major role in neighbourhood regeneration.
