DSP &
SHO jailed for accepting Rs 5 lakh as bribe from US NRI
to escape to USA in bigamy Case

Faridkot, Punjab sessions judge ordered a two-year rigorous imprisonment,
a fine of Rs 8,000 each to two police officers, DSP Bhupinder Singh
Khatra and SHO Major Singh for accepting Rs 5 lakh as bribe from
US resident Amarjit Singh in exchange of tampering documents and
detaching their passports from the records.
In 2001, NRI Amarjit Singh's first wife Pal Kaur of Dhudi village,
accused her husband of keeping two wives. After the complaint:
- Amarjit Singh and his second wife Gurmit Kaur of Kosha Kotla
village, were arrested.
- Amarjit and Gurmit got bail and approached DSP-Bhupinder Singh
Khatra and SHO- Major Singh for help
- The police officers took Rs 5 lakh and detached the two passports
from police record on the condition that they will returned the
passport after the travel
- Amarjit Singh and his second wife Gurmit Kaur left the Country
and the passports were sent back to his mother Raj Kaur. She delivered
the passport to the police.
In June 2002, Amarjit Singh's first wife Pal Kaur came to know
the whole story and approached the high court. On the directions
of Punjab and Haryana High Court, the police had registered a criminal
case against the Amarjit Singh and his second wife Gurmit Kaur.
The police also registered the case against the DSP, SHO and Atam
Singh, Amarjit's brother. While the court held the two cops guilty,
it acquitted Atam for lack of evidence.
