60-year-old woman gives birth to twins in Canada

NRI Sikh Calgary woman, Ranjit Hayer has given birth
to twins at the age of 60 on Tuesday. She was trying to get pregnant
for more than 40 years. She is one of the oldest women to deliver
a baby in Canada.
Hayer reportedly underwent in vitro fertilization
last year in India using a donor egg before returning to Canada.
Ranjit Hayer spoke to a CBC reporter from her hospital
bed Thursday morning before the news release was issued. Hayer
said:
- She was determined to be a mother, and had tried for decades
to conceive naturally and with medical intervention.
- One effort in India failed when she and her husband paid a
doctor for in-vitro fertilization, but he absconded with their
money.
- I always said there should be a baby. I had my heart set on
it, I wanted a baby
- I used to say to my husband, 'Go ahead, marry someone else,
you have earned so much'
- He used to say to me, 'There's nothing wrong with you, if
God wants us to have kids, he will
- During one fertility treatment in India 10 years ago, a doctor
reportedly absconded with cash the couple had been putting aside
for years
Her husband, Jagir Hayer, 60, said:
- Ther were several serious complications arose during the donor-egg
pregnancy including gestational diabetes and high blood pressure.
- My wife is in good health, the twins were delivered about
seven weeks prematurely and they are both thin but healthy,
weighing around three pounds.
- The babies should be home within one month.

Dr. Randhawa said: a woman's fertile years ended at menopause
but Egg donation and in-vitro fertilization have made pregnancy
after the age of 50.
- Omkari Panwar, 70, in India, gave birth to twins, weighing
two pounds each - a boy and a girl in 2008
- An Austrian woman gave birth to her third child at age of
66 and second child at the the age of 61
- Barcelona woman, 66, gave birth to twin sons in 2006
- Frieda Birnbaum, 60, gave birth to twin sons in 2007
Mr. Hayer said there will be a large party when the twins arrive
home in four to five weeks.
