Arun Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Professor at Stanford University, where he serves on the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and is a Senior Fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy.

Dr. Majumdar is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1985 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989.

Arun Majumdar's was a telecommunications specialist, serviced radio equipment at various airports. He watched aircraft he watched landing and taking off all the time and he made wooden gliders and experiment with his own model airplane designs. After secondary school, he took the entrance exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology and selected one of the 1500 students  slot out of 150,000 applicants. He was offered a Regents fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied the science of heat and radiation
