Jayant Kadian, 20 man was arrested Friday in Harrisonburg
and charged with murder in connection with his mother's
slaying Thursday afternoon. Jayant Kadian, 20, was located
by U.S. Marshals in a James Madison University parking
garage Friday and was interviewed by Fairfax County
police.
Fairfax County police said Rajeshwar Singh Kadian,
a doctor specializing in gastroenterology, came home
shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday and found his wife,
52-year-old Kiran Kadian, dead. Investigators said she
had been stabbed.
Police searched the Kadian home Thursday night and
seized two knives, swabs of blood, handwritten notes
and court papers. The search warrant stated investigators
were looking for, among other things, any "suicidal
writings [and] medical documents" for Jayant Kadian.
Fairfax police did not say what Kadian was doing at
JMU, but he attended the university during the 2004-2005
school year, according to university records. He is
not currently enrolled at the school.
Kadian was apparently also attending classes there
in the spring of 2004 when he continued a court hearing
on a charge of petty larceny due to midterms. He pleaded
guilty in March 2004 to the misdemeanor charge of trying
to steal four DVDs from a Reston Best Buy and paid a
$250 fine.
Neighbors declined to speak about the family or else
said they did not know them well. The Kadians bought
their spacious home in 1992 but at some point lived
in Kansas City where Jayant was born.
He is being held in the Rockingham County jail pending
transfer to Fairfax County. Police have not released
any motive in the slaying.
