The judge, Mr Justice Royce has sentenced three teenage
boys- Stephen Pritchard, of Dibden, Daniel Rogers, of Fawley, both
18, and Chay Fields, 16, of Blackfield, more than 19 years in jail
for killing an Indian sailor, Gregory Fernandes, 32, of Goa. In
Winchester Crown Court, they admitted manslaughter in a "racially
motivated" attack after Fernandes arrived on a ship near Southampton.
Gregory Fernandes and his friend Vinod Pithilnaviram,
29, had been out for a drink at the hotel on the evening of 20th
October 2007. They were returning to the cargo ship The Garonne,
berthed at Fawley oil refinery, had been chased, punched and kicked
down the road by the young mob of about 20 teenagers. A passer-by
helped Mr Fernandes to the docks and he died from heart failure.
Stephen Pritchard, of Dibden, Daniel Rogers, of Fawley, both
18, and Chay Fields, 16, of Blackfield, jailed for six-and-a-half
years each for killing an Indian sailor in a racist attack.
Mr Pitchilnaviram suffered a broken shoulder. Aged
15, a fourth teenager admitted GBH against Mr Vinod and was sentenced
to a 12 month detention and training order.
Aged 15, a fifth boy admitted causing actual bodily
harm against Mr Vinod, cannot be identified, was given a non-custodial
18-month supervision order.
According to the police, before the attack, they were
talking each other, saying they wanted to beat up a 'Paki'. Mr Fernandes
who suffered only a broken tooth, not severely injure in the attack
but the pleas indicated the "very serious responsibility"
of the three teenage boys in the death of the sailor. They had faced
a murder charge, which they had denied, and the prosecution accepted
the lesser count.
