NRI, Ravinderjit Kaur Puar of Vancouver who
is also known as Ravinderjit Kaur Shergill, politician,
daughter of Sikh leader Kalwant Singh Puar was charged
with selling the drug ecstasy to an undercover agent.
She ran for the NDP nomination in Vancouver-Kensington
and lost. She was elected as a delegate for the Paul
Martin leadership team in 2003.
Her father NRI, Kalwant Singh Puar is executive
member of Vancouver Ross Street Sikh temple. He is
well known figure for supporting in the election of
federal Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh. She was also
getting ready to run as a councillor in Vancouver
this November - she and her father were huge supporters
of Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell's group.
Magistrate Judge Mary Alice Theiler in U.S. denied
Ravinderjit Kaur Shergill's request for bail Thursday.
Her father offered to post a $30,000 bond to have
her released.
Story of her arrest
by DEA (Drug Enforcement Administrationspent):
On June 01, 2005, the DEA got a tip that Puar was
looking to sell tens of thousands of ecstasy tablets.
Using undercover agents, the DEA four weeks attending
various meetings with Puar and her associates at restaurants
in the Seattle area.
The DEA agent asked her if he could purchase just
1,000 pills to start, but Puar reluctant to sell not
less than a minimum order of 5,000. She also offered
to send a driver to Portland with pills, but the DEA
agent said he preferred to deal with her. She said
that her drivers had been working for her for 10 years.
By referring to her drivers:
"They
don't f--- around with me because ... they will be
f---ing six feet under and they know it, because my,
you know what, brothers will put them six feet under.
"Yeah, it's that simple. That's what the game is like
in Vancouver. You f--- with us, you die. Well I don't
know if you listen to the news and stuff. In Vancouver
... you pay for it and you know how bad you pay for
it."
In one meeting, she claimed "her family organization
'has it very well with the cops' and
that police in Vancouver, B.C. work for the organization
as her father is very well connected politically,"
the documents said.
She said that is why no one rats out other gang members
involved in drugs: "No one talks to the cops. If you're
in jail with this person, you have a family member
out there."
The court papers said Puar first provided the agent
with 2,700 "blue dolphin" pills that cost $3.50 each
US.
Puar maintained phone contact and held meetings with
the DEA agent throughout June, offering 15,000 ecstasy
pills ranging in price from $3.50 to $5 US each.
Charging papers said that during meetings in Kent and
Auburn, Puar arranged the sale of 2,800 "blue
dolphin" ecstasy pills to an undercover agent
for $9,800 US, and that she offered 15,000 more pills.
On June 3, "Puar told SA Kenekoa that she is
a politician, her father is also a politician, and
she cannot have any "heat" on her. SA Kanekoa
said to Puar that he thought selling marijuana and
ecstasy was safer than selling drugs. Puar told SA
Kanekoa that "we don't drop our weed off here,
we take it all the way to California."
One of Puar's co-defendants, Sarbjit Singh Virk,
was ordered detained pending trial, while two others
- Kamaljit Singh Ghag and Sarbjit Singh Sandhu - were
released with conditions.
