NRI Dr. Joy Saini, a renowned urogynecologist and founder of the Boston Pelvic Health and Wellness Center, tragically lost her life in a plane crash in Copake, New York, on April 12, 2025. The crash claimed the lives of six individuals, including Dr. Saini's husband, Dr. Michael Groff, a Harvard Medical School professor and neurosurgeon; their children, Karenna and Jared Groff; Karenna's boyfriend, James Santoro; and Jared's partner, Alexia Couyutas Duarte.
The family was en route to the Catskills for a birthday and Passover celebration when their Mitsubishi MU-2B aircraft, piloted by Dr. Groff, crashed into a field shortly after requesting a revised approach to Columbia County Airport. Weather conditions and low visibility are considered as potential factors, though the exact cause remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Dr. Saini was celebrated for her contributions to women's health and her pioneering work in urogynecology. She held dual board certifications from the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and was among the first women in the U.S. to receive fellowship training in her specialty.
