According to a letter sent to his family by the Indian embassy in Amman, 47-year-old Indian-origin Thomas Gabriel Perera was shot dead by Jordanian security forces while trying to illegally enter Israel. He hailed from Thumba in Kerala, India. He was part of a group of four men who had travelled to Jordan on a tourist visa on February 5. Perera worked as an autorickshaw driver in India.
The two were promised jobs in Israel with a lucrative monthly salary of 350,000 rupees (£3,180) by a fellow Indian working in Jordan. They had allegedly paid the man 210,000 rupees (£1,908) in advance, with an additional 50,000 rupees (£454) per month if he got the job.
On the night of February 10, Perera and another person attempted to illegally cross the Jordan-Israel border near the Karak district. The Indian Embassy letter cited by the Indian Express said that security forces tried to stop them but were ignored. The guards then opened fire, and one bullet hit Perera in the head, killing him instantly. His body was later shifted to a local hospital.
The fate of his companions and further details about any ongoing investigation remain unclear. Indian authorities are in touch with their Jordanian counterparts to seek the return of Perera’s remains and further clarification on the incident.
