New details have emerged regarding the tragic crash on Ontario's Highway 401. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has provided further insight into the incident, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a three-month-old infant, following a police pursuit near Toronto.
Confirming the victims' identities, the SIU disclosed that the deceased were a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, grandparents who were visiting from India. Additionally, the infant's parents, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother from Ajax, Ont., sustained injuries in the collision.
The pursuit originated after an alleged liquor store robbery in Bowmanville, escalating into a high-speed chase where the suspect drove against traffic on Highway 401 in Whitby. Tragically, the pursuit concluded in a multi-vehicle collision, resulting in fatalities not only for the pursued suspect but also for innocent bystanders.
Identified as a 21-year-old man, the suspect was involved in the collision, with another individual, a 38-year-old, sustaining serious injuries. The investigation is now focused on evaluating the actions of the involved officers, with two under scrutiny and four designated as witnesses. Interviews and reviews of their accounts will be integral to understanding the sequence of events.
Former SIU director Howard Morton emphasized the complexity and duration of the investigation, highlighting potential charges of criminal negligence causing death. Testimonies from witnesses, including those involved in radio dispatch during the pursuit, will be crucial in piecing together the events leading up to the crash.
Eyewitnesses like Milica Maljkovic Birkett recounted harrowing experiences during the chase, expressing shock and questioning the tactics employed by law enforcement. A police radio recording captured concerns raised by officers regarding the risks of the pursuit, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Despite mounting inquiries, Durham Police have chosen to maintain silence regarding the recent tragic collision. Their decision comes as the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues its investigation into the incident.
