NRI Manpreet Kaur, tragically passed away on an international Qantas flight. The 24-year-old, who had dreams of becoming a chef, was flying from Melbourne to Delhi on June 20. This was supposed to be her first visit home in four years, but she sadly never arrived.
According to a friend, Kaur felt unwell hours before arriving at the airport but managed to board the flight without any problems. However, when she attempted to fasten her seatbelt, she collapsed and "died on the spot."
The plane was still at the gate in Melbourne when cabin crew and emergency services rushed to assist her. "She struggled with her seatbelt when she boarded the plane," her friend Gurdip Grewal told the Herald Sun. "Just before takeoff, she fell in front of her seat and passed away."
It is believed that Kaur likely died from tuberculosis, an infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs, according to the Herald Sun. Her roommate, Kuldeep, mentioned that Kaur worked at Australia Post while studying cookery and aspired to be a chef. "She was kind and honest," Kuldeep shared. "She loved traveling with her friends around Victoria."
Kaur was finally returning to India to see her parents for the first time since moving to Australia in March 2020. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her family. "Our dear friend Manpreet left us too soon, leaving a void in our lives that can never be filled," the page reads. "As we grieve her passing, we want to come together to honor her memory and support her family in their time of need."
