NRI Kerala nurse, Nimisha Priya, on death row in Yemen

Rashad al-Alimi, Yemeni President approved the death sentence for Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who was convicted of murder. The execution is expected to take place within a month.

On 13 November, Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her appeal, clearing the decks for her execution. But as Yemen follows Sharia law, the court gave her one last option of escaping death - she can secure a pardon from the victim's family by paying diyah or "blood money".

Nimisha Priya was convicted in 2018 for the murder of Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi. The incident, which occurred in 2017, involved administering an overdose of sedatives to Mahdi in an attempt to retrieve her passport from him.

This case has drawn widespread attention, with Nimisha’s mother tirelessly pursuing a resolution while navigating complex negotiations in Yemen.

Prema Kumari, Nimisha's 57-year-old mother, breaks down repeatedly as she describes her daughter's ordeal.I will go to Yemen and seek their forgiveness. I will apologise to them, I'll tell them, take my life but please spare my daughter," says Prema Kumari who lives in the southern Indian city of Kochi.
