Scottish artist Jasleen Kaur, known for her innovative use of unconventional materials such as cars, worship bells, and the iconic Scottish soft drink Irn-Bru, has been announced as one of the nominees for this year's Turner Prize. Hailing from Glasgow, Kaur's work is deeply rooted in her upbringing within the city's Sikh community.

The prestigious art award, celebrating its 40th year, has also shortlisted Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson, and Delaine Le Bas. Describing the selection as a "fantastic shortlist of artists," Turner Prize jury chairman Alex Farquharson lauded the diverse range of works by the nominees.

The artworks of the finalists will be exhibited at London's Tate Britain gallery starting from September 25th. Each nominated artist will receive £10,000, with the winner, to be announced on December 3rd, receiving £25,000.

Farquharson highlighted the vitality and depth of the artists' work, emphasizing their ability to captivate, surprise, and evoke emotions through their art. He noted that the nominated artists explore complex identities and memories, often conveyed through intricate details.

The shortlisted artists include Manila-born Pio Abad, whose exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum delves into colonial history and personal experiences growing up in the Philippines. Delaine Le Bas, originally from Worthing, presents an exhibition titled "Incipit Vita Nova," exploring themes of heritage and personal transformation. Manchester-born Claudette Johnson's solo exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery in London showcases portraits of black individuals, celebrated for their emotive power and technical mastery.

Jasleen Kaur's inclusion in the Turner Prize shortlist recognizes her groundbreaking exhibition "Alter Altar" at Tramway, Glasgow, featuring a diverse array of elements including family photographs, vintage cars, and traditional handbells. Her unique blend of personal narrative and cultural symbolism has garnered widespread acclaim.

As the Turner Prize marks its 40th anniversary, the selection of these artists reaffirms the enduring richness and diversity of British artistic talent. Each nominee brings a distinctive perspective and creative vision to the forefront, reflecting the vibrancy of contemporary art in the UK and beyond.
