This painting work was a scene from ‘Mugal-e-Azam’
and prepared by M F Husain, named by Forbes magazine as the "Picasso
of India" with the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan giving
some "nervous strokes" at the finish. It was was auctioned
for 160,000 pounds at Bonhams showroom, one of the oldest art
galleries in London.
According to news paper,Shah Rukh said, "Husain saheb has
been painting women in pursuit of the image of his mother."
Husain lost his mother when he was 9. Asked how would he rate
the painting, Shah Rukh said, "I am with the Master (Husain).
I can stand with a brush and colour and it will turn into a masterpiece."
Standing next to the 92-year-old artist, Shah Rukh decided to
be his humble self and said, “I have grown up seeing Husain
sahib. We used to run after him. Best was that he never wore shoes!
So, I'll just stand next to him and whatever I do, it will be
a masterpiece because Husain sahib is here.”
Asked about SRK's contribution to his painting, Husain said:
"Being an artist, whether you are a painter or an actor,
we are bound to add some colour, something to whatever we do.
The painting is almost done, I am lucky that Shah Rukh is with
me for the final touches.
Husain added, "We never try to create a piece for posterity
but as Charlie Chaplin said, 'we create and then people corrupt
it into art'." On the controversies back in India, he said
"when we create something new, people take time to understand.
It's like Renaissance".
Shah Rukh offered, "It is very difficult for an artist who
has his own mind to please everyone. The sign of a great artist
is to be in controversies." The auction also saw art works
by Satish Gujral and Anjolie Menon sell for hefty amounts. The
proceeds went to a charity.
Khan, who knows Husain personally and owns one of his paintings,
said that it was an honor to be able to share the canvas with
the 92-year-old artist.
