to USA

Chandigarh, January 20: Another case of NRI marriage turning into
an alleged trauma came to light this week, but this time the victim
was the bride, who though United States citizen, is presently
staying at Mohali with her father.
The matter came to light when the Mohali police
booked Amritsar resident Kanwarjit Singh, his mother Lakhwinder
Kaur, sister Kirandeep Kaur and Kanwarjit Singh’s USA based
father Surat Singh, on charges of criminal breach of trust and
dowry-harassment, on the basis of a complaint lodged by Harpreet
Kaur Bal, Kanwarjit’s wife.
“The marriage became a trauma for me, as
my husband Kanwarjit used me as a ‘visa’ to United
States”, Harpreet told Newsline. She got
married to Kanwarjit in 2003. Harpreet alleged that when her husband
got the visa to United States, his behaviour changed and after
getting the ‘green-card’, he started harassing her
for bringing a car and cash as dowry.
“When I expressed my inability to do so, even
my father-in-law tried to kill me in USA by pointing a gun at
my head. I lodged a complaint against him with the police, acting
on the basis of which a case was registered against my father-in-law,
there,” Harpreet added.
Talking to Newsline, Harpreet said, “My father-in-law
is also a US citizen, but despite that my husband Kanwarjit Singh
could not get the VISA to US. After getting married to me, he
got the VISA, but the moment he landed in USA and started staying
with his father, his behaviour changed. From our marriage, we
have a daughter and a son. Ever since, my husband got a green-card,
he and his family started demanding a Mercedes and cash Rs. 25
lakhs. When I refused, he and his family members started torturing
me”.
Though the police have not yet made any arrests,
but the investigating officer of the case, ASI Kuldeep Chand,
told Newsline that the matter is under investigation.
