Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) member and
co-chairman of PPCC's Kisan and Mazdoor Cell, Parminder
Singh Gill on Thursday threatened to resign if a case
relating to an NRI from Canada marrying a girl from
Gurdaspur town and abandoning her after collecting
a cool Rs 5 lakh as dowry for the wedding was not
taken to its logical conclusion.
Gill also demanded that the Centre amend the Indian
Penal Code to make anti-dowry laws more stringent
thereby preventing such culprits from escaping arrests.
Addressing a press conference here, Gill said the
NRI from Canada had married the girl from Gurdaspur
in January 2003. Once the girl went to her in-laws'
place in Delhi, she was tortured and was asked to
arrange Rs 5 lakh.
After collecting the money, the girl's
in-laws made another demand for Rs 5 lakh. Apart from
torturing the girl, her in-laws also tried to set
her ablaze.
The girl's mother, who visited Delhi, found her in
a pathetic condition due to torture and brought her
back to Gurdaspur.
After a couple of days when the girl's family tried
to contact her husband's family, they were not found
in Delhi and their whereabouts were not known.
On a complaint, a FIR was registered against the
in-laws under dowry laws, but the police did not take
any further action.
However, higher police authorities had marked about
half-a-dozen inquiries with no apparent progress in
the case. Gill alleged that attempts were made to
protect the NRI and his family after they appeared
for the inquiry.
