AN NRI marriage gone wrong, Rajinder Kaur, along with her one-and-half-year-old son, are today literally begging for justice. It’s been over 10 days since a harassed Rajinder Kaur is running from pillar to post to teach her husband a lesson, but the Chandigarh Police seem to have developed cold feet and have not done much yet.

Rajinder Kaur (22), who is presently living with her parents in Sector 29, had a harrowing experience when she went to Italy after marrying a neighbour’s son. The dowry given by her parents was taken away by her in-laws and she was dumped by her husband at a secluded place with her seven-month-old son.

“It was an arranged marriage. I went with my husband to Italy, but after a few months, things started changing drastically. There was a sudden change in his attitude. His parents also started misbehaving and torturing me,” Rajinder Kaur told Newsline.

Rajinder Kaur got married to Parminder Singh on January 12, 2003. In August 2003, she went to Italy and started staying with her husband. After about three months, Parminder brought her back to India and after staying here for a few days, went back to Italy.

“I was left alone. I went back to Italy after a couple of months of waiting. My husband and his parents maltreated me and even beat me up. I even complained against him to the police there, who gave him a warning, after which he allowed me to stay with him. But one day, he took me to somebody’s place, dumped me there and went away with another woman. Luckily, there were a few Indian and Pakistani families, who came to my rescue and arranged a return ticket for me from Italy to India. I came back in December last year,” Rajinder Kaur added.

Rajinder Kaur had lodged a complaint with the Chandigarh Police against her husband. Ten days have gone by, but the Woman and Child Support Unit here has not been able to help her in any way.

When asked, DSP D.S. Thakur said, “I don’t exactly remember the case, but it might be on the counselling stage. I would get it checked tomorrow and definitely act according to law.”

Rajinder Kaur’s father Puran Singh claims to have spent about Rs 10 lakh, his entire retirement money, on his daughter’s marriage and her three visits to Italy. “We were left with no other option but to approach the police, but to no avail,” he said.
