NRIs, to first get the marriage registered.

Punjab Minister for Social Security and Development of Woman and Chidren Gurkanwal Kaur cautioned the people today especially those who are marrying their daughters with NRIs, to first get the marriage registered.


Besides, social security number of the NRIs should also be mentioned in the marriage certificate so that in case of fraud, appropriate action could be taken against the defaulters, she stressed.

Reviewing the women problems with senior functionaries of Punjab State Women Commission here, the State Minister said that number of such cases had been reported, where NRIs bridegrooms had deserted their legally wedded wife misrepresenting the facts.

She said that now women need not to visit Police Station in context of dowry complaints. For this purpose, SDM had been appointed as a Dowry Prohibition Officer and Children Development Project Officers as Prohibition Officer in the State.

Kaur said that the Commission had received... ... 532 complaints regarding Dowry, Rape, Property disputes, Illegal relation, Sexual Harassment at work place, Domestic disputes etc. during the year 2004-05.


Out of it 71 complaints were settled with mutual agreements, 145 complaints were under action and 318 complaints were filed for no action.

Representatives of the Commission had visited women cell in jails, police stations and factories to check the working conditions and behavior met out to women.

They have written to the concerned authorities for removing the dispenses, which they found during their visit.

The Minister said that to protest the rights of women, committees had been contituted under the Chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner at district level.

To improve the financial conditions of the women, Social Security Department is running many schemes including Mahila Jagriti Saheme.

There were 4530 Self Help Groups working the State.
