Desertion of wives by NRIs- request the state governments to take remedial measures

UNI New Delhi March 10:

Charging the government with pursuing “bad politics” in Goa and Jharkhand, Leader of the Opposition, Mr L K Advani today said in the Lok Sabha that the ruling coalition should give up its “emergency mindset” and stop trying to grab power in each and every state.

“Even though, after emergency no one dared to impose it, the basic mind set that they should have control over the whole of India is still there,” Mr Advani said while wrapping up the Opposition participation in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address to Parliament.

There was a vociferous demand from the ruling party benches, particularly Ms Ambika Soni, in support of RJD member, Ms Kumkum Rai who wanted to discuss the Mr Fernandes’ statement in which he reportedly said Ms Gandhi would “meet the same fate” as her mother-in-law, former prime minister, Indira Gandhi.

DESERTION OF WIVES: Conceding that there had been several cases of desertion of wives by non-resident Indian husbands, the government said remedial measures, including free legal counselling to the victims, were being taken to bring about an amicable settlement.

In a written reply to a query in the Upper House, the Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr Jagdish Tytler said his ministry was aware of a number of cases wives being deserted by non-resident Indian husbands.

The action taken so far had been to request the state governments to take remedial measures, including creation of separate cells, to provide free legal counselling for the prospective brides, Mr Tytler said.
