CHANDIGARH: UT police on Friday camped at MCM DAV College to motivate
girl students to take precautions while going for matrimonial
alliances with NRIs. UT IG SK Jain inaugurated a new cell at UT
police pre-marital assistance cell, which would help the bride’s
family to know antecedents of a groom settled abroad. The information
would include his financial status and social security numbers.
DSP, women and child support unit, Kulwant Singh Pannu, said they
have tied up with police forces around the globe.
The IG asked the girls to be more vigilant while
choosing the groom, especially if he is one who has settled abroad.
Meanwhile, to sensitize these girls, SP Rajinder Singh Ghuman
made a presentation about results of various overseas marriages,
which are done with no formal matrimonial investigations. Advocate
Ranjan Lakhanpal shared his opinion about the trouble faced by
girls who are married abroad.
“We are starting a service on our website
wherein the girl’s family could verify the facts through
us,” said Pannu. “We want girls to be strong enough
to take a right decision about their life. I have been coming
across at least one complaint daily about disputes in NRI marriages
during my tenure.”
