HARSIMRAT WRITES TO PM- OPPOSES BAN ON

INDUCTION OF WOMEN AS OFFICERS IN PARAMILITARY

FORCES

Chandigarh, June 2:

Member Parliament from Bathinda constituency Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal today wrote a letter to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh seeking immediate withdrawal of notification of Union Public Service Commission barring the recruitment of women as Officers in Paramilitary Forces.

In a communiqué addressed to Prime Minister, Mrs. Badal regretted that UPA government claiming the credit of introduction of Women Reservation Bill in Parliament was now barring the entry of women constituting 50% population of the country, as direct officers in Paramilitary Forces. She said that UPSC in a notification had made clear that only male candidates can apply for the post of officers like Assistant Commandants in Sashastra Seema Bal, Border Security Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police and no women candidate would be allowed to apply for these posts.

She said that when Border Security Force opened the entry of women and they were posted on Western and Eastern borders, the infiltration and smuggling from these areas declined considerably. She said that Prime Minister should immediately intervene to withdraw this retrograde notification as it would send wrong signals to the world community regarding the status of women in India.

Member Parliament said our country, with women donning the posts of President of India, Speaker of Lok Sabha besides our women entrepreneurs like Indira Nooyi heading Multi National Company PepsiCo and Chanda Kochar controlling the reins of largest private sector bank ICICI, should become trendsetter in women empowerment, rather than to introduce such retrograde policies.

Seeking early passage of Women Reservation Bill, Mrs. Badal said that Prime Minister should take initiative to get this bill through Parliament as women of India have been deprived of their rights since last 62 years.
