66 LABS TO TEST SOIL SAMPLES IN THE STATE

Chandigarh, April 08, 2008
Naginder Singh

To get more produce with less cost farmers should get soil of their Agriculture field tested, free of cost from 66 soil test Laboratories set up in the state by Agriculture Department Punjab.

Giving this information here today Mr. Sucha Singh Langah Agriculture Minister Punjab said that capacity of these soil testing labs was 5.95 lakh samples per year. Eight out of these labs has the ability to test micro nutrient elements. He said farmers should use fertilizer only after knowing the deficiency of elements in their soil. This could be possible only after getting soil tested and Agricultures Development officer would recommend the required fertilizer after seeing the report of the sample. With this farmers would be able to use prescribed fertilizer instead of using various types of fertilizers.

The Minister further said that like soil, testing of water for irrigation was also necessary. Under ground water in all areas were not of high quality. Polluted waters leaves negative affect after irrigation on soil as well as on the produce.

Farmers should contact Agriculture Development Officer, Block Agriculture Officer or Chief Agriculture Officer of their respective district for more information, he added.
