A four-member CBI team on Thursday left for Mumbai after registering a case against Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Anees Ibrahim and three others on charges of extortion and smuggling machinery for setting up gutka factory in Karanchi.

The CBI registered a case last evening after the Centre issued notification under section 5 of the DSPE Act for launching probe into an FIR registered by the Mumbai police. Earlier the Maharashtra government had written to the agency giving its consent for taking over the case.

As of now the agency has reregistered the case, but the sleuths have not ruled out bringing to book Manickchand gutka owner Rasiklal Dhariwal and Mr Jagdish Joshi of Goa gutka, against whom the Interpol has been approached for issuing of red corner notice.

The duo are UAE-based NRI and have denied the allegation through a statement released to the media. Dhariwal has also offered to be questioned through video conferencing facility.

Anees along with Jamiruddin alias Jumbo, Rajesh Panchariya alias Rajubhai and Mohammed Farukh Mansuri have been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Arms Act and MCOCA Act.

Both Kaskar and Mansuri are key accused in the Bombay blast cases of 1993 and are since absconding. They are facing red corner notices issued against by the Interpol.

It is learnt that the CBI team would be interacting with their Mumbai counterparts on the investigation held so far and question Jumbo and Rajubhai if possible.
