NRI Nikhil Kamkolkar's movie "The Indian Cowboy" was released this week (Feb. 23) in the United States.

NAZ 8 – Artesia, CA,NAZ 8 – Fremont, CA, Fun Asia – Dallas, TX, NOVI Towne Center – Detroit, MI, AMC Barrington – Chicago, IL, Galaxy Cinema – Atlanta, GA, Regal Commerce Center Cinemas – North Brunswick, NJ , Cineplaza – North Bergen, NJ

Ths movie has a romantic story and gives it a twist. The film bills itself as a "love love story" where one of the courting couples' desire to return to India gets in the way of the relationship. If two people want to be in different places that can create a lot of conflict. This film sort of goes into that space and explores it a little bit,” says actor and director Indian Cowboy, Nikhil Kamkolkar.

However, there is more trendspotting. This time that of Indian techies in America taking to making films.

Nikhil Kamkolkar is the latest member of this club. One of the pioneers was certainly Nagesh Kukunoor, who actually left his career and returned to India for a successful foray into filmmaking.

“I know Nagesh. I'm from Hyderabad as well. Interestingly or coincidentally enough, we both went to Monterrey, California to get our H1 visas stamped in our passports. We shared our thoughts on filmmaking on the bus ride back from Monterrey in Mexico. Now, of course, he's gone and got much success, much well deserved success. We've always been an audience member and, I think, coming to the US exposes us to the opportunities where you believe that you can make a film, it's not just about the star sons who get to do this,” says Kamkolkar.

Nick wants to write the world's greatest love story. Problem is, he doesn't really know what love is! When his matchmaker mom throws him together with Sapna, a beautiful, saucy woman from India, Nick falls in 'love' with her. Unfortunately for Nick, Sapna no longer believes in love because her fiancé, the only man she ever loved, left her at the altar. But Nick melts the armor shielding her heart. Sapna starts to believe in love again. Unfortunately for Nick, she decides to track down and get back with her ex-fiancé! Problem is, she ends up falling in love with Nick instead. Unfortunately for Sapna, Nick no longer believes that she is his true love…

Indian Cowboy boasts an exciting cast of professional actors, including Sheetal Sheth (American Chai), Deep Katdare (American Desi), Jonathan Sale, Sundra Oakley, and Carla Borelli - a veteran of film and TV. And myself, in the role of Nick. The production ball started rolling when Anura Idupuganti, a NY-based producer joined the project.

“Rock on! Fall in Love-Love”, says Nikhil Kamkolkar, director of INDIAN COWBOY, announcing the release of the soundtrack album for his romantic comedy with a Desi (South Asian) flavor. “There is more to the South Asian music scene than Bollywood”, Kamkolkar goes on. “The amount of talent out there cross-pollinating new genres, bringing together a rich musical heritage mixed in with their own experiences is very exciting. This album gives you a taste of where we are headed!”

INDIAN COWBOY is written and directed by Nikhil Kamkolkar - an immigrant from India now living in New York. Inevitably perhaps, this soundtrack is very diverse in its sensibilities. It offers an exotic blend of music. The sixty-minute-plus soundtrack CD, delivers Bollywood-inspired indie rock, Bhangra from the U.K., desi diva Falu’s sultry vocals, Karsh Kale’s blend of soaring Indian classical vocals with electronic tabla and electronica, the velvety “Indian Cowboy” title track by Uday Benegal and Jayesh Gandhi’s talented band Alms For Shanti, and several cutting edge Indie bands and artists from Seattle to New York and beyond. A trip-hop style rendition of “L’Amour” from Georges Bizet’s Carmen – a ‘trip-hop’era in French – is a good example of this album’s musical diversity!

Asked to describe the soundtrack album, Kamkolkar declares “It’s a perfect date album. Play it in your car while riding with your significant other!”

Artists featured include Karsh Kale, Alms For Shanti, Gabrielle+G.A.R, Spyglass, Leslie Nuss, Val Emmich, Falu with Karyshma, and Kam Dhillon, and the album is now available at several retail outlets including amazon.com. The film itself will soon be released in selected theatres in North America.
