'The Great Laughter Show', Hasya Kavi Sammelan in Los Angeles

Federation of Indo-American Associations of SoCal (FIA-SC) under the leadership of its president Anju Garg celebrated India’s 63rd Independence Day at Excelsior High School Auditorium here tonight by holding a Hasya Kavi Sammelan (Laughter Show) that was attended by approx. six hundred cheering people. Anju Garg was supported by Rajinder Dhunna the executive Vice President of FIA-SC and rest of the officers. Three well known Hasya Kavis (comedy poets) were invited from India to entertain the audience.

Program started at 6:30 pm by traditional lamp lighting by Mayor of Cypress Dr. Prakash Narain assisted by Anju Garg and Rajinder Dhunna. The whole team of FIA-SC and UFICA officers joined in Flag hoisting that followed the lamp lighting. Mayor Dr. Prakash Narain recognized FIA-SC president Anju Garg with a plaque for outstanding contribution and service to the Indian community. Sunil Garg, an FIA officer and Anju’s husband, recognized and welcomed the Hasya Kavis by presenting them with beautiful plaques.

The laughter show started around 7:00 pm. First one to entertain the audience was Gaurav Sharma a renowned stand up comedian of Great India Laughter Challenge fame from Mumbai, India. His one liner jokes and short comedy poems kept the audience laughing and clapping throughout.  Next one up was Dr. Kirti Kale from Delhi, India who enthralled the audience with her romantic but funny poems. She had a unique style of reciting her poems through beautiful melodious voice that kept the audience mood swinging from spell bound to sudden burst of laughter and applaud with punch lines. She introduced the lead Kavi Surender Dube by cracking a few jokes about him. Surender Dube, winner of prestigious Kaka Hathrasi Award (a top honor for comedy poets) began by advising the audience how to put together funny matrimonial ad for single men that actually did not work for him. He is known for his poems that not only make people laugh but emanate patriotism at the same time. After thirty minute break the laughter show continued till approximately 11:00 pm. Most of the people liked the show so much that they stayed till the end of the show despite being a Sunday night and many have to go to work the next morning.

The lead Kavi Surender thanked the organizers for inviting them and giving them the chance to meet and entertain their fellow Overseas Indians. The show concluded by offering of beautiful flower bouquets to Surender Dube by Kewal Kanda, to Dr. Kirti Kale by Rajinder Dhunna, and to Gaurav Sharma by Ajmer Singh. President Anju Garg introduced her team of organizers and thanked them for the hard and dedicated effort to put together a successful laughter show.
