Sindhis Celebrate All Night Mata Ka Jagran in LA

Los Angeles, Sep. 24, 2011
By Dilip Butani

Sindhi Community of Southern California celebrated their Eighth annual All Night Mata Ka Jagran on September 24, 2011 at the Sindhu Center, Norwalk.

Jagran Samrat Amit Anand literally mesmerized the audience with his melodious voice and devotional bhajans. One after other, he and Vishal Viz sang popular bhajans and kept every one spell bound through out the night.

The Sindhu Center hall was packed to capacity. The program started at 7 PM, with Pooja by Pandit Bhagirath, followed by dinner. The first session of Jagran started at 9 PM and went on till mid night when there was a break for tea and snacks. The second session started at 12:30 AM and went on till about 4:30 AM. Jagran also included a 30 minutes dandiya session. The Jagran ended with Mata Tara Rani Katha and Aarti.

Amit has recently released his new CD ‘Maiya Rani De Bhawan Te Dhol Vajde’.

Jagran is performed all through the night to thank the Holy Mother for her blessings and love she has bestowed upon every one. It is believed that one who approaches the Mother with a pure heart never returns empty handed. In Jagran the Holy Mother is invoked by singing the devotional songs (bhents) and is invited to grace the gathering with her presence. It is believed that the Mother visits in form of a jot (flame) which is lit before the ceremony.

Durga Ma or simply Mata (mother) is the embodiment of the success of good over evil.  Durga Mata is personified in various forms viz. Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Her significance is Shakti or power, the power to crush the evil. She is very aptly called as the Mahishasura-Mardini as she killed the demon Mahishasura. She fought with her 18 armed hands on a lion and killed Mahishasura after a fierce battle. Ma signifies Shakti and her forces are a combined force of the Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara.
