Punjabi Student
Speech Contest - A Great Success
Nov. 15, 2009
Vancoucer, BC, Canada
Punjabi Language Education Association (PLEA) had
a very successful Punjabi Student Speech Contest on Sunday, November
8, 2009 at Frank Hurt Secondary School in Surrey, BC, Canada. A
large number of students from various schools, Kwantlen Polytechnic
University and UBC took part in the competition.
The students were divided into three categories-beginners,
intermediate and impromptu fluent. The beginner and intermediate
categories were given a choice of four topics. These were: Foeticide,
Importance of Sports, Homelessness and the 2010 Winter Olympics,
in Vancouver/Whistler. The students in the impromptu fluent categories
were given a topic on the spot. They were given a few minutes to
put their thoughts to-gather.
The students did an excellent job in researching
and articulating their ideas. The delivery was commendable. Also,
the style of delivery and audience appeal was remarkable. It was
a real treat listening to these young boys and girls in this very
formal setting. Every student who participated was presented with
a certificate of participation. The winners in each category were
given a cash prize of $100 for first place and $50 for second.
The winners in the beginners category were Farah
Rashid and Rose Dhillon (first and second respectively). Those who
won in the intermediate category were:
- Ramandeep Singh Randhawa, first and Prabhjot Kaur Singh, second.
- Winners in the impromptu fluent category were :Ivneet Singh
Bains, first and Simran Kaur Dhillon second, both from UBC.
PLEA is very thankful to all of the students, their
parents and teachers. On behalf of PLEA, I would like to thank the
Indo-Canadian media both print and electronic- for their very valuable
assistance in this regard. Also, I would like to express my sincere
thanks and appreciation to the Deepak Binning Foundation, India
Cultural Centre of Canada (Gurdwara Nanak Niwas #5 Road) Richmond,
Khalsa Diwan Society Vancouver and the Akali Singh Sikh Society,
