Sunday, July14 was ideal for walking and running in Metro Vancouver. Volunteers and well wishers of Guru Nanak Free Kitchen (GNFK) were in full force to raise money for this well deserving charity. More than 300 people turned out to walk, run and bike to raise more than $65,000 for GNFK. The participants included over 100 cyclists doing 100 kilometers each, over 40 cyclists doing 60 Kilometers each and 150 people doing the 5 km and 10km walks in this Fourth Annual Bike and Walkathon run. The youngest participant was 5 years old whereas the oldest was 78. India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara management and Sangat was pleased to provide refreshments to the participants as they arrived at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas on their way to other rest stops. These participants were moving from place to place to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
According to GNFK spokesperson Surinder Sahdra, since its inception in 2006 , this charity has provided over one million free ,warm and nutritious vegetarian meals to those in need .The bike and walkathon runs bring to-gether community members of all backgrounds, regardless of their religion ,gender or age. In a sense, this special event is a day of celebrating, sharing and helping those in need. Sahdra stated that GNFK is a registered charity focused on making a positive impact on the residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). The proceeds from these runs go towards the operation of GNFK and the building of a new facility in downtown Vancouver. This new facility is expected to be ready by the end of 2024. Once ready, it will enhance services and enable the GNFK to provide Langar seven days a week to those in need.
With the money raised through these Bike and Walkathons, GNFK is also able to provide thousands of toys and clothing to children and the needy. This organization embodies the Sikh principal of Sarbat Da Bhala (well-being of all). With this objective in mind GNFK, in addition to the DTES, also serves those in need throughout the Lower Mainland. Its motto is: Love All. Feed All. This is a very noble cause. These dedicated volunteers have been doing an excellent job in helping those who need its help the most. Gurdwara Nanak Niwas management and Sangat is pleased to support GNFK in its mission and wonderful work of helping the needy.
