Gadar Movement centennial is now part of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2013


Centennial of Gadar Movement to be highlighted at PBD 2013 in Kochi

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated on 9th January every year to mark the contribution of Overseas Indian community in the development of India. This year, Govt. of India announced that Gadar Movement centennial is now part of PBD 2013.

GOPIO's chairman, Inder Sing told us that Indian Govt. was approached to get this approval as follows:

  • In August 2012, a delegation of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO Int'l) met with Minister Vayalar Ravi and other officials of Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and Minister Parneet Kaur and other officials of Ministry of External Affairs in connection with the centennial celebration of Gadar Movement in 2013. GOPIO proposal for an oration, a panel session, an exhibit and release of Gadar Centennial Book by Hon. Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD 2013) in Kochi, was discussed.
  • The delegation included GOPIO Chairman Inder Singh, GOPIO President Ashook Ramsaran, accompanied by Munish Gupta, GOPIO Regional Coordinator (Africa), as well as K. N. Gupta, GOPIO Director, Liaison to Government of India. GOPIO delegation also met with Dr. Karan Singh, President of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) who took Inder Singh’s proposal for the centennial celebration to Dr. Manmohan Singh. 
  • Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has now issued press release in which they have confirmed, “Since we are celebrating the centenary of the Gadar Movement in 2013, the PBD Oration this time will be on the gadar Movement. We will also have an exhibition on the gadar Movement.”
